Jet A1 Aviation Fuel keeps the planes flying in and out of Dublin Airport, facilitating business passengers and freight transport, taking Irish holidaymakers to their destinations and bringing tourists in.
Jet A1 Aviation Fuel is transported from Dublin Port to Dublin Airport by road tankers. IPC proposes to provide a Jet A1Aviation Fuel pipeline as an alternative transport mode. The route of the proposed pipeline is shown on the attached map. Here are the responses to frequently asked questions about the project.
Q) What is Jet A1 Aviation Fuel?
A) Jet A1 Aviation Fuel is more commonly known as Kerosene and Paraffin. Kerosene is
used as a home heating fuel and is stored in tanks normally located in back gardens. It is
also in common use as a fuel for household heaters and illy lamps
Q) Is it dangerous?
A) Under normal conditions Jet A1/Kerosene is stable. At typical Irish temperatures
JetA1/Kerosene/Parrafin is difficult to ignite.
Q) How does Jet A1 /Kerosene work in a jet engine or central heating boiler?
A) In a central heating boiler or jet engine the fuel is used at high pressure and has a specially
designed source of ignition
Q) Why transport by pipeline?
A) Public Safety. Potential for a tanker spill is 100 times greater than a leak from the pipeline
Environmental Benefits. Reduction in traffic volumes, noise, emissions, accidents.
Q) What is the likelihood of a pipeline leak ?
A) 1 in 5,130 years.
Q) What happens in the unlikely event of a leak?
A) The leak detection system automatically closes down the pipeline within three minutes and pipeline personnel are alerted. Emergency response personnel will ensure that spill is contained and cleaned up without danger to human life or health.
Q) How big is the pipeline?
A) The length is 14.4km (9 miles) and the diameter is 200mm (8 inches). The pipeline is continuously welded steel (12.7mm or 1/2"). The pipeline is coated to prevent corrosion (rust). The inclusion of physical and technological safety features are designed to protect human life, health, and the environment.
Q) Duration of the construction and how will it affect me?
A) The construction period is 10 months. The construction will cause temporary traffic disruption and interfere with access to homes and business. Traffic Management Plans to minimise disruption will be agreed with the Local Authorities. It will take no more than two days to pass an individual dwelling.
